Kicking off the year with two hot novellas

During the holidays, I spent a whole day just relaxing with several novellas, a couple of which I now present to you ;o) Hot and bored? No more!

NAUGHTY LITTLE WISHES

What a naughty little treasure! This delicious novella got me entertained with no effort at all. A tough man with past traumas too rigid to let change free him and an outrageously spontaneous woman who'll challenge him all the way to happiness. I really liked how outspoken and unbendable Tab is, she never wavers when she defends her stance, job or free style. And I loved how she could maneuver Drew into opening up little by little.

It's not an easy road, though. He's stuck in the past and it's consuming his present. The injuries he carries with him are affecting all levels of his life. It was so interesting to watch his struggled, the pain that made me ache for him. Even though she doesn't want to fall for someone so vastly  different from her, the loss and sacrifice he has endured call to her and remind her of her own past.

I found both characters endearing, their plight was moving. The story is full of lively dialogues, steamy intimacy, true feelings and a battle of wills.

I felt there was a good story there and it was both well written and developed. There were several fun moments such as the business meeting when Drew is sent a few arousing photos.

Of course, every romance needs its share of drama, so Tab goes too far in her meddling ways and she crosses boundaries that put her blossoming relationship in peril. There was a scene full of tension because some delicate issues are tackled in this novella. I liked it a lot. I love my romance to go through some drama before the happy ending. I was a happy reader at the end.

BETTING ON FATE

Two dominant natures clashing for power? It certainly was interesting to watch. Rivals for contracts, Will and Penelope find themselves betting a week of submitting to the winner. And it's her who has to wear his collar and submit to his erotic games of power.

I must say it was highly entertaining to witness these two proud characters tease each other, find their limits. She challenges her temporary Dom for all her worth and, to his surprise, he likes it. She's afraid to lose herself in the process while it won't mean a thing to him.

While they play out their seven days, there are scenes full of heat and bdsm games. They challenge each other, push their boundaries and exchange fun verbal banter. It's obvious they're afraid to let go and put their souls in someone else's control. At the same time, they can't really stop doing it piece by piece.

When their first emotional boundary is crossed, I loved the way she wants to stay with him afterwards, but is afraid to ask, to go too far. Will is there to save both of us (the character and the reader) and take us with him, surrounded by his strong, comforting arms. It was perfect.

As things progress, there is a scene at the club that broke the magic a little for me. I understand where it came from. I'm not against threesomes in a story, but they have to grow on me from the start, either be part of the romance or be there before it begins. This one was there to prove the Master's command over his sub. Great point in their relationship, for sure, but it's not my cup of tea when a stranger walks into a couple's connection. It destroys the magic for me, sorry. However, it was very well described and with taste. No complaints in the passion department with this story and author. It's all really hot.

And I also liked how troubling it is for them to fall in love because it might mean to lose themselves, to fall into mistakes their parents had made before and risk everything they've accomplished. I could relate to them as real people. In the end, after a painful fight and an epiphany for both of them, the happy ending is our reward. Good writing and an original story. Go ahead and read it!

The more the merrier: three new romances from Entangled

Hey, book buddies! How is summer going? To tell you the truth, it's sizzling right here ;o) And all because of three books I've been reading this past week.

THE WAGER

I love novellas, but this is the first time I wish one had been much, much longer. It's such a waste of a good idea to limit it to so few pages. It'd have been worth it to explore this tantalizing relationship between this lord and lady that stems from a lurid book shunned upon by society. So worth it!

What a delightful... well, everything. Not only the concept is utterly delicious, but the writing is full of win and fun.

In just 65 pages, the author managed to make me smile, sigh, feel, laugh, and long for the lovely things that happen in this story.

Anne is opinionated and probably doomed to ending up as a spinster. Never mind, she likes her freedom of spirit. The man who once loved her sister disapproves of her behaviour. When due to an unintentionally cruel remark from Anne, they start exchanging correspondence, the dynamics between them shift. A new world of unexpected intimacy, mental and physical, opens up.

My favourite parts:

- The letters. What a great idea it is to just pen alternating letters they send to each other. They are so funny, smart and subtly naughty.

- The book. It's called Confessions of a Courtesan, and tells of all the forbidden things that a lady should never be aware of that entail passion of the marital nature. Anne and Michael tease each other about the contents of this scandalous book in the most witty and steamy manner.

- The wagers. Anne is always making bets with her sisters, she likes the challenge and winning too. Thankfully, Michael entertains a new wager with her that stirs all kinds of delicious behaviour.

I wholeheartedly recommend it for everyone who loves a sensual historical romance with a surprisingly daring female character and a beautiful relationship that goes from apparent dislike to deep belonging.

I'm weak, and with a title like that, I had to have a taste of it ;o)

It all starts with a good girl who wants to forget her boring day-to-day life and have a go with the dark side of excitement. What could be more thrilling than to have a one-night stand with a hot, tattooed stranger in a club?

What follows is a lot of melting hot sex.

At times Skylar seemed to be a little too forward for a supposedly good girl, but we live in a modern world so let's accept female attitudes are not as demure as they used to be. I liked her, though. She's bright and open-hearted, and she wants to break her predictable routine. I like that in characters.

That's where Gage fits in. He's all muscle, intensity, excitement.

He's a former MMA fighter and now co-owns a successful night club called Sin. As if that wasn't enticing enough...

The electricity just flies between them, laying grounds for explosive encounters that I enjoyed freely. Gage is  too locked up. I understand that his harsh life has made him like this but it was frustrating to see him push Skylar at every turn, gently but relentlessly. She doesn't cave in. She overpowers his lack of trust and self-worth by sheer kindness and cheerfulness, and yes, loyalty.

It's a good story. The pace never falters, keeping interest high thanks to a heady combination of hotness, sweet relationship advances, and family issues that burden both characters which brings him together and also adds more depth to the plot and spice up the drama.

Apart from the sexy times and the brush with the MMA fights world, I loved how Skylar's giving nature really cleanses Gage's guarded heart. It made the heartache worthwhile.

THE IRRESISTIBLE MISS PEPPIWELL

It's so refreshing to find a historical romance that comes loaded with hot scenes and passion. The Irresistible Miss Peppinwell is about a woman who defies society's conventions in her pursuit of freedom, and a man who seeks exactly that to feel fulfilled.

It's a very entertaining read thanks to:

- the lady's aloofness poses a challenge for the gentleman who coaxes her inner fire in the most ardent and delicious manner

- she's not shy about desires of the flesh which is a welcomed change in the usual female protagonists of this kind of romance

- both Philippa and Anthony carry a secret burden on their shoulders that makes for a lot of drama, adventure and heartache

I liked how forward both are with their desires, even if at the beginning Philippa is the Ice Maiden because of the dire situation she finds herself in. A certain nobleman is not behaving properly towards her and she has to put distance from this rake to protect her already feeble reputation.

It's true that Anthony is also daring with his advances, but their stances in life coincide so well that it helps with their fast intimacy.

Apart from the writing, perfectly attuned to the period, I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Philippa's past in Boston, and the unity in Anthony's family. His brother and sister have their personal tragedy to contend with. It felt real and was very appealing to read about.

Hot, dynamic, life-changing love story. Good assets for a historical romance, I believe.

New Releases, Review of One Night in Buenos Aires + Giveaway

Hey, book buddies, I hope you're enjoying summer wherever you are. One way to enjoy heat is to indulge in a hot book, so here I am with my review of ONE NIGHT IN BUENOS AIRES, by Amanda K. Byrne, and a giveaway on the side.

Have you ever thought of crossing the boundaries from friend to lover? Joe and Drea never have, but they find themselves tangled in bed when waking up in Buenos Aires after a mix-up with their reservation.

Heartfelt surprises, challenges and sexiness ensue, of course.

They don't give in to temptation right away. Not yet, no. Even though the chemistry (and my curiosity) is there, they still take their time to think it through and settle some guidelines before they do a reckless thing that threaten their valuable friendship. I appreciated that. After all, it's an honest reaction to their feelings, and , and also serves to enhance the anticipation.

The author balances all elements with ease and sensibility. She takes her time to indulge in delicious intimacy, but never forgets to deal with feelings, consequences to change, and insecurities about what those changes might bring to their relationship. A wonderful background is Buenos Aires with its cafés, history, food and tango.

A nice sentence was stuck in my head which I loved:

(about museums) Good places to get new ideas.

So cool.

After a week of emotional and physical intimacy, Drea and Joe have to go back to their usual selves and routines. That's when they face the ultimate challenge, whether what they've become is more powerful and fulfilling than what they used to be. Oh, I must confess, that ending was so cute! Cats included ;o)

Whether you’re looking for a romance that makes you laugh, makes you ‘walk the plank’, keeps you guessing, or stars your favorite paranormal, look no further. Select books have the single-title stories you crave, and the longer length you need to really get ‘lost’ in a great book. To find out more about their titles, chat with authors, participate in special events, and to find out what books are coming next, visit the Entangled website, follow them on Twitter, and like their Facebook page.

Angel Kin and The Demon Lord: amazing reads + giveaways

Despite my impossibly hectic schedule, I couldn't pass the opportunity to host and read these amazing books. Loved them both!

Today's post is brimming with new things:
reviews, a guest post, contact info and giveaways.

HAVE FUN!

THE DEMON LORD

What an alluring world the author has created! I love it as much as the sensuality that drips from every elegant line of the writing.

The world was occupied by demons, but the destruction that came with them was too much to bear. So, Goddesses crafted a way to protect the remaining world by ostracising the demons to their own territory.

There was too much devastation, too many deaths. It all weighs heavily on Allia's conscience. She loves the wonders of this world, and the inner beauty and strength of humans.  That's why she concedes to a plan to seduce and enslave the Demon Lord. Thoush she never envisioned falling for him.

I relished the concept of demons hunting for a forever mate, and that the Goddesses were their intended lovers. It was touching and scorching hot how Allia and the Demon Lord's relationship develops. Allia is a serene, sensitive, loving creature. Her dangerous lover, on the other hand, is worth swooning over.

Another thing that charmed me was the power that a Goddess harnesses over the rain,  its meaning and scope. I'd very much like to delve more deeply into the worldbuilding of these two races. I think the adventures and drama to come are worth exploring.

**

THE DEMON LORD
by Paula Altenburg

Blurb:  The Demon Lord has conquered the mortal world and sampled its pleasures. Now all he needs is to conquer the goddess who is meant to complete him. She, however, has other plans.

Allia is sent by her goddess sisters to win the heart of the Demon Lord and make him her slave. But Allia soon discovers that the Demon Lord’s heart is not easily given, and that in order to win it, she must sacrifice her own.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR...

I’d like to be able to say I always wanted to be a writer, but the truth is I thought it looked like a lot of hard work. Life, however, sometimes leads us down paths we never intended to take.

From the very beginning, my parents encouraged my love of books. When a Grade One teacher suggested I wrote too many “thrillers,” my mother, an English teacher, said I could write – and read – whatever I wanted. My high school English teachers later backed her up on that. In university, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Anthropology. At the time it was a whim, but it’s amazing how much that little piece of paper has benefited me over the years. Researching the history of civilizations has led to many intriguing worldbuilding possibilities.

When my children were babies and money was tight, my mother, grandmother, and husband bought me an electric typewriter for my birthday because they knew I was bored and wanted me to be happy. My mother became my very first critique partner, willingly reading pages and pages of manuscripts no one should ever have to suffer through. She researched markets for me, and introduced me to a journalist friend, who in turn introduced me to the Writers Federation of Nova Scotia. My brother and my brother-in-law introduced me to Thieves’ World, David Eddings, and Piers Anthony. My sister gave me my first computer.

My grandmothers believed if something’s too hard, you aren’t working hard enough. My brother and sisters have all successfully followed their dreams, and my husband and two sons offer me proof every day that hard work is something to be embraced, not avoided. With these people behind me, how could I possibly stray from a path on which life seems to have planted them as guardrails:

angel kin

I wanted to read this book because I'm keen on angels, and this one promised to deliver twins. That's a hook for me!

An exciting combination of action, paranormal creatures and politics, Angel Kin has been a great discovery.

Cain is harsh, don't-ffol-with-me kind of angel, a half-breed actually. It was a bit difficult to connect with him at a romantic level at the beginning for his abrupt behaviour towards Katie. Rest assured that it all changes for the better. How much steam? Oh, enough, I promise!

Both Cain and his evil twin Abel are charismatic characters. The whole story around what happened to them as kids is a very engaging element of the angelic folklore that makes up for the politics plot in motion. I loved everything that had to do with the Directorate of Heaven, the Renegades, and especially the Angel powers. There are really thrilling to have. Quite shilling, but oh so full of potential.

I liked Katie all right. She doesn't let herself be bullied even though she's sorruounded by truly dangerous creatures in dire circumstances. And there are plenty of them. Mobster vampires, lychanthropes, dark elves... add depth and incentive to the urban fantasy feel of the city.

Regarding Abel, I had mixed feelings. He's the villain here. A murderer all right, but his cool demeanour and his vendetta made me think that he was biding his time. Whenever he'd tire of so much bossing around by his masters, he'd break hell loose on earth. I relished that feeling of expectation. Still, I harboured the tiniest hope of seeing him redeemed.

I was really invested in the brothers' relationship. I so much wanted to know whether they were going to patch up or destroy each other. Also, the Renegades pose an awesomely wicked challenge to the world and the Bound, the good angels. I'm dying to find out the outcome.

It was a lot of fun to read the from the start to the ending: the writing is feisty, with funny remarks, a creepy, intense first chapter, thrilling body-to-body fights, biblical conspiracies, an amazing clash of titans between brothers, and a steamy romance.

TRICIA SKINNER

THE POWER OF UNLAWFUL
HEROES AND HEROINES

V. Black Widow. Captain Jack Sparrow. Nikita. Jericho Barrons in Karen Marie Moning's Fever series, or Zoe in Firefly. Sarah Connor. What they all have in common is the "hell yeah" factor that makes heroes and heroines fresh and vibrant in today's urban fantasy and paranormal romances, television shows, and movies.

The draw to characters that will do anything necessary to reach their goals is what makes them so interesting to watch and read. Don't you sit a lit straighter when reading how the hero or heroine plans to get information from a source. They're not planning to have a nice chat. They plan to break some bones, possibly threaten a few innocent people, all to get what they need.

This type of hero comes in many shades of gray. We pay close attention to their motivations, and we crave tiny morsels of information that provide a clue to their way of thinking. What happened to them to make them so scarred inside? How could a woman be so hardened she doesn't think twice about spying on people who trust her?

Often the character has been through unimaginable pain and heartbreak. The affect on a child's psyche, as with Dexter Morgan, could turn them into monsters as adults except for an outside influence. In this case, Dexter's adopted father.

But there are other characters that seem to revel in their chaotic nature. Captain Jack Sparrow couldn't walk a straight line, whether sober or full of rum. It's not his nature, and it wouldn't have made him as endearing to audiences if he was a clean and straight laced as the admiral, by comparison.

In my novel, Angel Kin, Cain is a good man, but he's learned hard lessons since childhood. With his family killed and himself taken to Heaven to train as an assassin, Cain struggles with his choices. He kills, but has good reason. When his way of life is threatened and the woman he's falling in love with is in danger, Cain faces both sides of himself, never sure which will win out.

That's the kind of story that should suck a reader in. Never knowing when the hero or heroine will slip into their darker selves to complete a mission makes for great reading or viewing material.

ANGEL KIN
by Tricia Skinner

Tagline: The thief will steal his heart...

While channeling Robin Hood’s “steal from the rich and give to the poor” attitude at a local politician’s house, ex-con Katie Logan witnesses a forced suicide. Dirty or not, supernatural or not, he didn’t deserve to die, especially not by his own hand. But with her record, stepping forward as a witness isn’t an option. On the run from the police and the murderer, she turns to The Bound Ones for help.
When a beautiful woman comes to The Bound Ones, half-angel assassin Cain is immediately drawn to her. But when she fingers him as the killer, he can come to only one conclusion. The twin he thought was dead is very much alive…and trying to send him a message. Unfortunately, that message is: “You’re next.”
It’s a race against time as Cain fights to save the woman he’s falling in love with before his brother Abel destroys them both.
