This is not Forbidden for you: guest post + review

If you're curious and you know it, read a book... :-D Ok, it's not an original line, but hey, I'm not the writer with a creative mind, that's CATHY CLAMP, today's wonderful guest on Literaria. Please, welcome her as she deserves... with cupcakes and a curious mind.

Mating for Life . . . Or Death

Cathy Clamp

GUEST POST

My new novel, FORBIDDEN, hit the shelves in August and one of the issues in the book is mating among shapeshifters---specifically werewolves. My shapeshifters are known as the Sazi, and they come in pretty much all predatory species. Wolves share the planet with great cats, bears, snakes, lizards and raptor birds. While many animal species mate for life, humans don’t. Part of being a magical shapeshifter is taking on the traits of the animal. But not all animals follow “the rules”, so the Sazi don’t either.

Many humans who lose a spouse pine away until they die. They simply cannot live without their mate and die of a broken heart. The Sazi reality takes that one step further. With great magic comes great power . . . and great depression. When mating takes on a magical edge, the problems do too. Being cut off from the magic of the mating can cause physical and mental issues. Get cut off for too long and you can literally go insane or even pine to death.

What happens in FORBIDDEN is that our hero, Alek, becomes mated to the heroine, Claire. Unfortunately, it’s not a double mating, and Claire doesn’t feel the same. Oh, she likes him well enough, and could potentially come to love him. But it’s not the instant infatuation that Alek falls into. One he can’t come out of.

Ever. He has to have her, be with her. If he can’t . . . he’ll die from loneliness.

Magical healers can help if they catch a single-sided mating quick enough. They can shut down the tie before it becomes too strong and threatens a person’s sanity. A healer in FORBIDDEN puts a temporary magical block between Alek and Claire so they can function (and they have to function to survive the plot). But it’s hard on Alek. Depression looms constantly at the edge of his mind. He can’t understand why a woman he just met is affecting him so strongly and why he can’t get through the pain. Even worse, he knows Claire doesn’t love him in return. How can he possibly overcome that?

And Claire? She feels horrible guilt at Alek’s pain. But she can’t magically create love and anything else would be a lie that she couldn’t live with. She has to work with him and somehow balance the pain she knows she’s inflicting.

How do they get through it? Pick up a copy of FORBIDDEN and find out. You won’t be sorry... :)

I thought it was a very interesting issue in the plot,
so I'm eager to find out how it's resolved :o)

Would you like to know what I thought?

A gripping combination of paranormal intrigue, clever worldbuilding, moving characters, and hot action with a pinch of mouthwatering romance.

I was happy to encounter action from the start, heavily laden with mystery that never slows down. The detailed paranormal hierarchy and history of the shapeshifters are seamlessly interwoven as the plot advances. I really liked to know how Claire's magic works, what she can smell due to her wolf nature or the things that happened during and after the plague that affected her kin so appallingly.

However, that was not the only remarkable feature of the story. The many characters are relatable, interesting, they all interact wonderfully to enliven the mysterious plot that threatens Claire from the first moment she sets foot, not too softly, in town with a mission that rubs everybody the wrong way. Except Alek, who will turn to mean a lot to her in a very unexpected twist.

To my surprise, Claire's stay in town is marked with not only undercover investigation and lots of characters, but a huge dose of violence. Some of the traditions there seem gruesome and unjust. Of course, that served to have me glued to everything that was happening to her and around her.

I was really into the events while the mystery surrounding some kids and the mixed creatures-population took place. The only thing that bothered me somewhat was that a bit ugly truth is revealed in a very anticlimactic way, only to reveal it again as a dramatic surprise in a dialogue between Alek, Claire and another cat character. It had lost its edge by then, I'm afraid.

Throughout the story, there is a vibrant physical attraction between the two wolf-shifters, Alek and Claire, that was vividly described. Nice. And it's appealing on several levels, including a beautiful, poignant emotional scene linked to mating rituals and repercussions.
The final one hundred pages almost shake with the intensity of the discoveries, the magic, the violence and the wild emotions. I was as exhausted at the end as the characters. They all had to fight and bleed to come out alive of the veritable avalanche of terrible things that fell down on them.

Forbidden really convinced me in terms of plot, characterization and even quasi-romance. The soft cliffhanger is just enough encouragement to read the next adventure.

The Vigilante's Lover is complete

This serial is at the top of my list, book buddies. You know how much I like my dose of emotional, sexy romance in a novella-sized package. And THE VIGILANTE'S LOVERby Annie Winters and Tony West, has been an amazing discovery! Now the whole series is out there and you've run out of excuses not to check it out ;o)

This four-part romantic suspense series stars a hard-line Vigilante spy who gets tangled up with an innocent civilian with a mysterious past. Author Annie Winters is a four-time USA Today bestselling author under her other pen names Deanna Roy and JJ Knight. This is her first romantic suspense series.

The knots get really tight before they become loose. This episode, people! It's amazing. It's hot. It's bigger and better and I want more.

Jax and Mia are in the worst situation ever. Even though they're separated, they go through similar troubles. The conspiracy that lurks behind Jax's persecution is getting hotter, putting both of them at higher risks than ever.

I was greatly surprised by the insight about what happened in the past that linked Jax and his nemesis, Jovana. Again, I'm awed by the perfect combination of thriller scenes and astounding James-Bond technology. Each chapter is narrated from either Jax or Mia's POV, ending at the right moment to urge you on and make you squirm.

Both the action and the obvious connection between Mia and Jax are exhilarating at this point. Jax behaves like a first-class hero while Mia proves her worth in this cutthroat, fast world of spies, crime-fighters and impossibly cutting-edge technology. They make an incredible team. I loved to see them work together, finally in synch against a twisted conspiracy that ends with a bang and lots of spilled secrets.

It's been an amazing serial full of thrilling action sequences and sensuality, so after that bittersweet ending I feel I'm going to miss the Vigilante world with a vengeance. Hopefully, Jax and Mia will come back for a proper goodbye? Pretty please?

Spies, vengeance, and one seriously well-dressed man

"If Bourne dressed like Bond and acted like Grey, you'd have Jax De Luca."

An addictive new romantic suspense series from the desk of USA Today bestselling author Deanna Roy/JJ Knight

Mia trembles as she reads the letter that arrives from Ridley Prison.
Seduction. Bondage ropes. Descriptions of things Mia has never experienced or known.
The man’s words are desperately passionate. He longs for a woman who must have given him a fake address. Mia’s address.

She plans to send the letter back. He’s a convicted felon.

But his words gnaw at her. She’s never done anything dangerous. And no man has ever talked to her like this.

So Mia writes him, pretending to be the woman he desires.
It's her one dark thrill in her dull, solitary small-town life.
The man is in prison for another fifteen years.
It's harmless. She is safe enough.

Until he escapes.

Enjoy an excerpt

Vigilante’s Lover #1: Jax Arrives

I turn to the box of the letters from the prisoner, wondering if I can handle reading one more before I go to sleep. Maybe my dreams will be full of Jax De Luca. I lift my hand in the air, the long cotton sleeve of the old-fashioned nightgown sliding to my elbow. I giggle, imagining my wrist tethered to the bedpost.

I’m just not the sort of girl made for BDSM novels.

But Jax doesn’t know that. I can say anything I want to when I write him. He’s locked away. He’ll never know.

My eyes are heavy. For a little while, I drift in a twilight sleep. The letters ruffle through my thoughts. The cool silk of a well-made rope sliding around my wrist. The tickle of a sheet as it slips across my body.

Then I’m awake.

Wide awake.

The light on me is harsh.

My arms are immobile.

Both wrists are tight against the bedposts.

My breasts and belly are crisscrossed with red rope over my white gown.

One ankle is tethered to the knob at the base of the bed.

My other leg is in the air, lifted by an arm.

An arm in a slick pale gray suit.

A suit connected to a man with a scruffy beard and dark, impenetrable eyes.

“Good evening,” says a deep voice.

Oh, God. Who is it?

I can’t speak. I can’t breathe.

My nightgown is riding up, exposing my leg. The man tucks my ankle on his shoulder.

“Who…are…you?” I finally ask.

“I think you know who I am.” He reaches down for the sheaf of letters and flings them across my body.

“Jax?”

“The one and only.”

“But you’re in prison.” My eyes dart to my body, the rope, the white pages, and his lean body in the silk suit.

His grin spreads wide.

“Not anymore.”

A VERY INTERESTING ARTICLE ON KNOTS AND ROPES

Bondage, knot tying, and beautiful beautiful ropes
By Annie Winters, author of The Vigilante’s Lover

One of the things we decided early on in Vigilante’s Lover is that both Jax and Mia would be experts in tying knots.

That meant *we* had to become experts in tying knots.

Thankfully, Tony was a Boy Scout. And I have actually attended bondage workshops with a real Dom.

So Tony had a wide knowledge of practical applications of rope tying.

And I knew how those ties could apply to a romantic situation.

We found a very helpful book in Des Pawson’s book Knots: The Complete Visual Guide. When I turned to page 80, which is dog eared and my book opens to it automatically now, I knew we had the knot that would be the theme of the book.

It’s called a True Lover’s Knot. It’s made by binding two different strands of ropes together in a single beautiful tie. I began practicing making it, and the image of the knot in red and black is at the end of Vigilante’s Lover.

Along the way, we’ve learned about French Whipping Knots and Timber Hitches, and had a great time with the double entendres and hidden meanings in the ties we’ve found. The knots became a secret code between Jax and Mia. When things get super tough and it seems the bad guys have the upper hand, the knots are literally a tie that binds them.

Most of my books have some sort of new knowledge I need to acquire. I’ve trained with MMA fighters and followed doctors on rounds and learned how to clean a carburetor in the name of research. But the knot tying has been a beautiful and satisfying new skill for us. And just wait until you read some scenes that combine the ties and the sexytimes!

I am so happy that I was a part of this serial release each step of the way. I loved reading it, I loved the theme and the characters. And I loved to be able to be there as each episode became alive. Such a rewarding experience :o)

Guest post: The Healing Power of Love

Let's welcome author S. B. Alexander to my humble literary abode. Thank you so much for agreeing to this beautiful guest post on your tour for DARE TO KISS. It is a truly unique feeling to hear about a person's life in such deep, touching way.

How love changed my life.
S.B. Alexander

Love is a word that makes you smile, makes you cry, makes you feel, makes you sad, makes you think about a person, a place, and even a thing.

As a kid, I lived in world where love didn’t exist, a world where the norm was hopping from foster to foster home because my dad couldn’t take care of me after my mom died. So I never knew the meaning of what it meant to love a person. Honestly, I think hate was more powerful at that time in my life. No one told me they loved me, and I wasn’t in a foster home long enough to get attached to anyone. So as a kid I closed myself off and hid in a corner.

As I grew into an adult and continued my journey in life, I worried that the coldness inside me would never go away. How could I get rid of the bitterness and open up my mind enough to heal or let anyone in? Or even allow myself to understand what it meant to love another person. I saw my friends around me, and their loving relationships with their parents, siblings, husbands, friends and boyfriends. It saddened me to witness others happiness. Maybe my destiny wasn’t to experience love. Still, did I need love to be happy?

Then I had my first crush as a teenager. Butterflies found a home in my stomach when I laid eyes on a boy who lived in my neighborhood. What did it mean? Did butterflies equal love? Maybe I thought. I was certainly happy and giddy over the feelings I had for him. But after he broke my heart, I realized that even though things didn’t work out between us, I found hope that I was capable of feeling more than just hatred. But how would I feel or react if someone said they loved me?

I was careful with my heart as I continued to date. If loving someone ended with a broken heart, I didn’t want any part of it. Still, I had to put myself out there. I had to find out what it meant to really love and be loved.

Someone had told me once that love is a remedy for those that are broken inside.

After everything I experienced as a child I was skeptical. But when a lady whom I met while I was in the military took me in as though I was her daughter, I began to understand the meaning behind what that person had told me. She poured her heart and soul into showing me what life could be like when someone loves you unconditionally. She gave me her love. It was weird at first to hear a woman I’d known for only a few months tell me she loved me like I was her daughter.

From her friendship, her love, her time, her trust, she helped me unravel the confusion of my childhood. I realized I didn’t love me, or the person inside me. More importantly, she taught me how to love myself before I love someone else.  Our time together was inspirational, cathartic and overwhelming, and to this day she’s still a guiding light in my life.

I thank God everyday for the path I took. Love does hurt. Love does challenge you. But most of all Love does heal. Without love in my life, I may not be where I am today.

All In: sexy couple + guest post+ giveaway

As I had the opportunity to read BREAK ME, by Autum Stark, I couldn't say no to the next story, ALL IN. I assure you it won't disappoint you if you're looking for a sexy read that shines with originality.

MY OPINION OF ALL IN

I really liked how this couple meets. They're opposites. She's close to a reclusive and he's an actor pursued by paparazzi. When he breaks into her home looking for shelter from fans and flashes, she's not overly opposed to his proximity. Not only is he famous, but she's heard lots of things about him through their common friends, Tony and Abby, something she hides from him. That's how they end up spending a night talking, watching a movie on TV, and then it all leads to a pact of wild and unrelenting sex.

It was a lot of fun to see Parker and Jay play this game of cat and mouse. No strings is not going well with them, so pent-up frustration often explodes into red-hot encounters.

Even though they crave to have a relationship, their lives are so different that it poses a really tough challenge.

The author manages really well to infuse the intense lovemaking with emotional need. There's a couple of intimate things that may seem a bit unrealistic, but that's what makes the story all the way hotter and more intense.

Favourite quote:

Jay had worked himself into the fabric of her life. She was starting to hoipe a little that maybe she could keep him there.

Favourite moment:

the sweet and funny phone conversation they have while Jay is in L.A.

Things get really complicated for Parker, her quiet life goes to hell in the most unexpected way. It's all Jay's fault, of course, because he has issues with anger and control that are spilling into his relationship with her. That part of the story got me glued to my e-reader with my eyes wide open and my knuckles white-tight.

As I'd read Break Me, I was happy to get back in touch with Tony and Abby and her brothers. All those great guys are really alpha males but a close-knit bunch of good guys that are keen on family. It was pretty touching how they all stand up for Parker in the protective, big brother style

The ending was quite hectic and romantic. I'm definitely invested in this family now so I'd like to read whatever the author creates in the future.

Topic: Top Ten Things to Fight Boredom in Good Company

As writers, we spend a lot of time alone. It’s the perfect career for an introvert. But even introverts and writers have times they venture out into the great, wide world with friends. So what to do?

1.   Tacos and Tarot: You can never go wrong with food, and whether you believe in it or not, perusing the future and the unknown can be great for group speculation. Beyond the obvious “T” pairing, Tacos somehow end up always being fun (at least at my house) and rarely a miss.

2.   Kokology: This is a Japanese psychology game that is all kinds of giggles and epiphanies. The cool thing about this game is that it’s an instant boredom killer and helps everyone involved explore a pretty popular topic: what the hell is going on in our brains? Some are sillier and some more serious, but it’s actually pretty amazing and accurate.

3.    Coffee or Tea + Awkward Questions: When you’re with a group of people and there’s a distinct possibility that it will degenerate into conversations about the weather, my first instinct is usually to latch onto anything that will get people talking. First, liberally apply caffeinated beverages (or alcoholic ones at that). Second, ask an awkward question to get the conversation rolling. For example: Who would you eat first at this table if we were stuck on a desert island? It seems juvenile, but I guarantee it will make things more interesting and stave off boredom.

4.   Cards Against Humanity: This is a great game to play to get to know your friends or new people better. It’s sort of like throwing everyone into an X-ray machine and getting to really see what they’re made of--they can’t help but reveal their dirtier, un-PC side. It’s a highly entertaining and unusual way to spend a couple of hours.

5.   GIF Wars: Sometimes the “good company” is nowhere near you except virtually and/or near you but unable to do or say much (think commuting on the bus). Welcome to GIF Wars. There’s variations on this (Pic Wars, Quote Wars, etc), but I love GIF Wars. Text back and forth progressively funnier, wittier, or hotter commentary on the topic of your choice. Recently I engaged in a week long Pic War with a friend involving “Fantasy Husbands.” We’d send each other pictures proving our celebrity fantasy husbands were hotter and/or better than the other.

And now for a switch...What does “Good Company” equal? Let’s get specific.

6.   Your Best Friend: We all like to think we know our best friends as well as possible, but the truth is that there’s always something to find out. In moments of dire dullness, break out the “What If” game. It’s creative critical thinking at its best. For example: What if the man you were in love with wanted you to be the mother of his child, but only the mother of his child? Instant boredom killer and an interesting way to get insight into yourself and your nearest and dearest.

7.   A New Romantic Interest: The thing about dates with a new love interest is that they are always awkward and uncomfortable. They also tend to be pretty predictable. Not that that’s bad, but if you want to speed things along and see if he/she is worth your time, make a date to do something you love or enjoy that’s out of the ordinary. Go to a children’s museum and unleash your inner child. If they play along, hello date number two.

8.   A Committed Romantic Partner: There’s always room for depth and fun at the same time...something that’s more unusual maybe. Start a conversation that begins with “If you could do X over, what would you do?” Or, maybe, ask them to tell you about your very own love story. Hell, maybe tell them your version of your very own love story. Get interested in the details of your shared lives. It’s kind of amazing what you’ll find out sometimes.

9.   Family Time: Most of the time most of us love our families (born or made), but they can also create awkward vacuums of time for us. Try taking your family to do something “normal” for you, but not for them. I recently got my mother into making green smoothies with me. She was absolutely fascinated...and I got to prep for my normal life in the process.

10.           Yourself: Let’s face it. Most of us leave ourselves out of the equation, but you’re probably some of the best company around. So take some time out for yourself and do something you love, but don’t get nearly enough time to do (or feel guilty for doing). Play Candy Crush. You know you want to.

That was incredible! Thank you so much, dear Autumn :o)

Jay Markham, a wildly popular actor and a chronic womanizer, has become bored with his life. Jay decides to take a break and goes to visit his life-long best friend and famous romance novelist, Anthony Tate. But just because Jay decides to take a break doesn’t mean his fans will let him. The fans and the paparazzi follow him to the small Washington town and, in an effort to escape a particularly dogged fan, Jay ducks into the first open door he can find.

Parker Hardisson is a fairly normal, if self-contained, woman in her, ahem, early thirties. Relatively happy with her life as a freelance translator, she gets to work out of her own home and enjoy her life as quiet and drama-free as possible. So what if she’s a teensy bit lonely? So what if there’s some part of her that wants to explore the world? Things are working out just fine. So, when a mega-movie star comes slamming into her house, she wonders if she’s finally cracked.

Parker seizes the opportunity to make the deal of a lifetime. No strings, no questions. The problem is, Jay is playing this game by his own rules.

EXCERPT

It was possibly nine in the morning the next day before Abby barged into Parker’s house. To be fair, Abby had used her key which Jay must have given back to her, but it was as close to barging as one might get, all things considered. Parker was barely awake.

“Parker? Are you home?”

“Where else would I be?” Parker tried to sound pleasant, but at best she knew she sounded grouchy as she called out to Abby.

“I don’t know, having wild sex with Jay in Los Angeles?” Abby walked into the kitchen as Parker was focusing on pouring coffee grinds into her espresso machine. Parker graced her with a snort as an answer. “Well, you could be.”

“I don’t know what that overgrown pretty boy told you, but I am not going to Los Angeles.”

“I’ll wait till you’ve had your coffee.” Abby grabbed her own cup and patiently sat on one of the bar stools under her kitchen island. Parker tried not to remember exactly what had been done on that particular counter while also trying to remember if she’d sanitized the thing since the sex marathon had started.

“Coffee won’t change my answer.”

“Might make you more talkative though.”

“Or more able to kill without getting caught.”

“I’ll take the chance.” Abby grinned at her and Parker sighed.
