MY OPINION

Dark fairytale with a naughty but loving twist.

Did you ever love Zorro with his sweeping sword and debonair justice? I did! 

And it is so much fun seeing him come to life in this novella full of twisted sensuality, an evil curse, a man torn by conflicting desires, and a sweet young woman with a penchant for unruly defiance and hot rendevouz with masked strangers.

I enjoyed this story because the double POV shows the couple's struggle. The masked hero who is tempted into doing despicable things by an ancient curse while he also tries to protect and pleasure the object of his lust. And the young woman who hates him while she learns about her own desires with the help of his fox skills. 

It's provocative and bold, and also retains some fairytale quality in the midst of all the steaminess. A bit on the taboo side, but the adultery is masterfully avoided. 

 I liked his split personality, that she is adorably sweet yet also stands up for herself, and the ending with its theatrical plot twist and the happily-ever-after epilogue.  

For fifteen years I was the Black Fox, the hero of Spain, the good-luck devil. I made my enemies dance to my tune and fall to my sword. 

The day must come when every hero hangs up his cape, and for me, it was the day I outsmarted the curse. I would not die for love, because I didn’t love the woman I married. Valeria Hernandez didn’t love me. 

Then I met her. Lolita. Fresh from boarding school, as beautiful as a rose’s thorn and poised to pierce my heart. Little Lo is as dangerous as sin and twice as forbidden. She hates me, but she loves her Black Fox. Her savior. Her devil in black. 

How he loves to hear her call him daddy.

ENJOY AN EXCERPT

Lolita backs up toward the door, her terrified eyes never leaving my face. I put out my hand and shove the door closed, crowding her against it. "Who were you with?"

Lolita swallows and stares up at me with huge eyes. She can sense it, too, this power crackling through me. It’s like a hit of adrenaline and a shot of whisky, making me invincible.

"No one."

I slam my fist against the door, and she jumps. "Don’t lie to me." The scent from her body is all warm summer night and fragrant flowers. I’d know, wouldn’t I, if she’s had some man pressed against her? I grasp her chin and turn her head in the light, examining her lips and throat. Her mouth isn’t swollen with kisses. There are no red bite-marks on her creamy neck. The tight band around my heart eases a little.

She yanks her chin from my hand and glares at me. "Get your hands off me."

"In this house, you will obey my rules," I seethe.

"Go to hell."

So that’s how it’s going to be. That’s how she thinks it will be, anyway. I’m glad she’s misbehaved on her very first night. We can get things straight from the beginning. "Say you’re sorry for breaking the rules."

Lolita forces a laugh. There’s defiance in her eyes, but fear, too. She isn’t sure how far I’m willing to take this.

All the way.

I reach down and slowly unbuckle my belt, the black leather sliding through the silver buckle. "Last chance, Lolita. Say, I’m sorry, daddy."

Her voice is a horrified whisper. "You wouldn’t dare."

There’s nothing I wouldn’t dare do right now. There’s a voice whispering in the back of my mind, showing me the way forward. I loop the belt around her neck and draw her to me. “Tell daddy you’re sorry, and I’ll let you off just this once.”

Her eyes flicker with panic, but she doesn’t say anything. I tighten the belt around her throat until she struggles to breathe. "I’ve got all night. You’ve got about a minute till you pass out."

"I’m sorry," she finally chokes out.

"I’m sorry, daddy."

Her face creases with revulsion. I smile a slow, smoldering smile, anticipating how sweet it will sound from her pretty pink mouth.

"I’m sorry, daddy."

Her lips are so close to mine that I could drop a kiss onto them. Her breasts are pressed against my chest. I can smell her innocence, just begging to be consumed.

A delicacy like Lolita is meant to be savored. Slowly, I loosen my hold on the belt, slide it free from her neck and step back. "Daddy forgives you, babygirl."

Lolita takes great, heaving breaths. ‘I’ll tell Mamá what you just did. What you made me call you, you pervert.’

I chuckle, threading my belt back through my pants. "Go ahead. It’s not as if she’ll believe you, you filthy little liar."

Lolita bursts into tears, yanks the door open, and runs from the room. I watch her disappear down the hall, still grinning.

Then the smile dies on my face.

I stagger and clutch the door frame as horror crashes over me. What the fuck was I just doing to my stepdaughter? The righteous anger that sustained me all evening and told me that terrorizing Lolita was the right thing to do has evaporated, and I’m left cold and empty. I hear a faint peal of malicious laughter, and whip around.

‘Who’s there?’

The castel is still around me. The chirping cicadas cut through the night air. I look down at my hands, the ones that so recently held my belt tight around Lolita’s throat, and see that they’re shaking.

Who am I? What am I becoming? I don’t recognize myself from the man I was this morning. The man I was before I met Lolita.

MY OPINION

Impressive. Just impressive. I was not expecting such gut-wrenching drama and tension.

The Fae, New Orleans, and one woman in the middle of chaos and evil.

After The Prince, I was really pumped for Brighton’s story of revenge and forbidden love. A curvy lady with a tortured past, she’s still looking for her mother’s murderer in this very much sought after continuation.  

Caden is now the King, and he’s still infuriating, protective, elusive and downright tempting. I relished their confrontations, their incredible chemistry. I agonized over his obvious feelings for her while he pushed her away because of his Fae status. 

Brighton is a fighter here, so brave and resilient, and I was really in awe of her when danger engulfs the plot. These chapters with her withstanding such a battle of wills and endurance was painful and awesome in ways you can’t imagine. Supernatural or not, this story pulses with intensity both emotional and life-changing. 

The romance is exquisite in its forbidden nature, the stakes are high in paranormal politics, and the cliffhanger is mortal!

MY OPINION 

The Wicked world is wicked entrancing. 

I found the suspense story around the fae people's current situation very engaging and conducted in a detectivesque-like manner. It piqued my interest in all the protocols, politics, past transgressions and facts surrounding the interaction between the summer court and the humans. 

The world - building traps the imagination with its realism. The preternatural war still affects coexistence in this mixed-species society in New Orleans. Survivors deal with feelings of loss and hatred both in the Order that protects humans from evil fae and among the fae from the summer court. They harbour heroes and villains alike which gives depth and danger to the atmosphere. 

The main character is a resilient woman, still reeling from tragic attacks from this fae race eerily similar to vampires. She's smart, driven, fights fiercely, and is relatably portrayed thanks to the sardonic writing style. While she seeks revenge on one thing, she finds herself seeking justice for another, crossing paths with a charismatic prince of the fae. So sensually charged! I melted with their intimate scenes. 

The kick-ass heroine on a personal mission, the very teasing and intriguing encounters with the handsome prince combine with sacrifice, devious secrets, maniacal action and forbidden caresses. I fell under the spell of a prince whose touch ignites passion in a woman who's been wrongly overlooked. 

Very enjoyable. Now, though, it's pain time because of that shocking cliffhanger. Where is my next dose of wicked?

Who is the mastermind? BEAIRD GLOVER

Beaird Glover grew up on a farm in rural Tennessee. He graduated from The Evergreen State College of Olympia, Washington, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in creative writing. He then moved to Southern California and wrote Secret Ciphers of the 1876 Presidential Election (Aegean Park Press). 
He has traveled extensively and lived in eleven of the United Sates, and Taipei and Buenos Aires. His poems have been published in the New York Quarterly and his chapbook of poetry was selected by the Austin Chronicle as one of the Top 10 Best of 1994. 

More recently, he acquired a Bachelor of Science degree from Long Island University in Brooklyn and has worked as a physician assistant. Beaird now lives in New Orleans with his wife Kim and their cats.

I wrote my first book in seventh grade, filling one hundred and four pages of a black and white Mead notebook. Back then I lived for two things: horses and R.L. Stine books. Fast forward nearly twenty years, and I still work with horses, and hoard books like most women my age collect shoes. Its amazing how much changes... and how much stays the same.

The dream of publishing a novel has hitch-hiked with me down every other path I've taken (and there have been many.) Waitress, farm manager, road manager, bank teller, speech writer, retail, and more. But that need to bring pen to paper refused to quiet. Finally, in 2009, I sat down, pulled out a brand new notebook, and once again let the pictures in my head become words on paper.

As a child, my grandfather would sit me in his lap and weave tales about the Cherokee nation, and a girl who belonged with horses. His words painted a whole new world, and my mind would take flight. My hope - my dream - is that Tanzy's journey does the same for you.

It's a pen name I created to honor two fantastic women who didn't get the chance to live out their professional dreams. First, my grandmother - a mother of four during post World War II America, who wanted to be a journalist so bad that even now when she talks about it, her blue eyes mist and she lifts her chin in silent speculation.
