My review

Did you ever have the fantasy of righteous serial killer Dexter falling in love with a young woman who's innocent, brave and in dire need of a family and a protective man? This is it, ladies. This. Is. It. Read this book and thank me later. 

I am ecstatic with this age-gap dark romance. He's a real Daddy, this Cullen with strong arms, tattooes under his black T-shirts and a deep, velvety voice. And don't forget he's also good at getting rid of bad people. In the bloodiest, most efficient ways. That has to add to the appeal, right? :-D

Well, on paper, or reading screen, he's the whole package. Cullen means a world of protection, safety, warm embraces and loving care for sweet Elena. And she relishes it to her core behind her beliefs of not belonging and being unworthy. My heart went out to her. She's so deserving of all the things that she's been denied. Yet Cullen is here to provide for her in a glorious spree of stalking, machiavellian planning and cunning to get his prized bride. I have to admit the lengths he goes to in order to lure the unsuspecting lady into his love trap would be concerning in real life, but here, in the intimacy of words and books, it's a forbidden pleasure I have enjoyed in body and heart.

The narrative is engaging as it takes you easily into the characters' minds. She's struggling but hopeful to get a grip in life while getting more and more dazzled by this charismatic presence, her boyfriend's father. I could relate to Elena as she fell under the spell of his respectful, loving attitude towards her. He's such a good father, such a protective older man. And oh so handsome. I also find it very interesting as the more criminal vein starts to unfold for Cullen, the reader follows his path of thought and action as he lets go of his inhibitions and lets his homicidal instincts free. It is oddly exhilarating.

Is it hot? You bet. Is it immoral and dark? No complaints from me because it's well explained and justified and flows beautifully into the characters' evolution. I love this couple. They are made for each other while keeping a loving, sensual and enviable relationship. 

At the heart of the plot lies the question of whether we can truly be ourselves with our loved ones. The answer to that question is a dark and dangerous journey. Getting to the end of it is quite a surprise. I'm happy I didn't miss all the mayhem and the love.

I put my hands on Elena’s waist and slowly back her against a bookcase. “You didn’t tell Leon about our kiss?”

Elena shakes her head. She's in the circle of my arms with my head bent over her.
 
“Why didn’t you tell him?”

“We made a mistake because of the intense situation.” But she looks conflicted. Because she doesn’t know what she wants, or because she doesn’t know if she’s allowed to have it?

 I bend my head lower toward her lips and whisper, “Was it a mistake?”
 
Is there a chance she doesn’t want Leon, and she wants me instead? Her mouth is parted, and her eyes are filled with longing. Does she ever look at Leon like this, or is this needy expression just for me? We’re so close that her face is just inches from mine. 

“Elena, how attached are you to my son?”

I know what I’d say if she wasn’t dating my son. Be a good girl and tip those pretty lips up for a kiss. But first I have to know how she feels.
 
“Cullan…” she breathes.

I cup her jaw and slide my thumb over her full lips. Elena closes her eyes and arches her throat as I touch her, and desire pours through me. She shouldn’t say my name like that and respond to my touch like that if she wants me to back off. 

I have to know if I have a chance with her. “Tell me. How much do you really want my son?”

So here is my recommendation to fans of dark romance. It's an amazing trilogy, but proceed with caution. Dark themes ahead.

MY OPINION

A gritty, dark story woven with mind tricks, retaliation, hard-earned freedom and crazy evil.What an intense rollercoaster. 

My favourite book is still the second, yet this is a great finale fraught with dangers galore and surprises all around.The cliffhanger in the previous book is masterful. It left me reeling with questions and an unrelenting need to read the final book. 

So it takes off with our couple in an upside down life where they have to unravel their mind state from a tangle of warped memories and muddled realities. It's awesome the way they carve out their real feelings out of that labyrinth. 

There's a lot of darkness to be survived and overcome that made me cringe. However, these characters that I've come to care and root for are fighters and they plunge ahead to protect their sanity while keeping emotional bonds alive and loved ones safe. It's really harrowing, yet also provides meaningful, tender relationships.

I loved the plot twist that makes it possible for the mind-manipulating Goliath to face their reckoning. All the characters get a worthy ending in this good-versus-evil war where the romance is as exhilarating as the action and the horror is as powerful as the love, family and hope all victims crave as their due.

MY OPINION

Let's plunge into the maze. It's a hard mission. I was taken aback by the sinister quality of some of the events that took place in book 1, so I was sure they would only intensify in this sequel. However, the pull of the mystery is too strong to deny. Book 2 it is :-D

After the shocking ending in the previous book, things progress with alacrity. Change of scenery, dangerous sensuality, mind-shattering revelations. What's not tempting about all of this?

Romy is equally strong and vulnerable, that's why I feel she's a great main character. Captive but pushing everyone's buttons. Smart yet dealing with a larger-than-life threat.

 I love how her relationship with Caius is slowly turning into a whirlwind of allure and trepidation. His point of view is so welcome!

There's so much happening in here, though. They become so embroiled in each other's hotness (expect a hot fest) that evil things end up running them over. And they blew my mind! The secrets, the twists and the sheer manipulation keep mounting up. I was glued to the pages because I needed to know more, how deep and far things would go, and what nasty machinations would spring up. It's an overwhelmingly addictive, dark installment. So many questions to unravel. Some do get some light shed on them, but only to enhance its bloody core. 

I was literally enthralled by the last part of the story because it's like a labyrinth you can't escape till it might lead to freedom after endless loops of madness or directly to the monster in wait. What a gripping ending! Hard, too. Nasty even. I crave the final book, ok?

MY OPINION OF BOOK 1

Is dark romance allowed to be cute? Well, I can eat that up like a decadent cupcake :-D This book is my first approach to the author. I gobbled up the hook because how can I resist? 

Hero? Serial killer. Heroine? Damsel in distress. 

Or are they? 

The truth is that he is twisted to the core, he finds a wisp of a woman in danger, suddenly becomes a dark saviour in a killing spree and there's a frenzy of mutual secrets crashing against each other like a dance of lust and soulmates. Wow.

I'm not sure if it's dark comedy, paranormal fantasy or a trick of the mind :-D

Macabre and adorable, gory and smitten, this couple surely will leave an imprint in our imagination. The final chapters are mind-blowing and the cliffhanger is to die for, almost literally!

MY OPINION OF BOOK 2

I couldn't stop myself from reading the next book in the House of Cryos series. The first book left me reeling with questions, so curiosity got the better of me. Minnie is revealed in a very different light in this second book. Things that were found out or explained before, now are fleshed out and in real action.

It was so engaging to get to know her story as she was before she met Marlowe in such dark circumstances. Funny and full of energy, she shows her mighty ambition for the good while getting into trouble and realising how difficult it is to deal with certain pesky necessities. That was hilarious. And I loved the character that comes to life to show how everything started for her. Their relationship is fun and intense, especially considering the stakes.

Minnie's attitude contrasts wildly with the historical context. That's a source of plenty of hilarious scenes and misunderstandings. On the other hand, the dark fantasy is so exciting because of the folklore and how to deal with it. I really liked that.

Even though the main focus of the first half of the book is on the crazy banter between the characters, fun and amorous, the lengths they go to will surprise you. However, the dark fantasy part is such a whirlwind of new things and valuable chunks of progress. It's mind blowing. Lots of action, magic, battles against supernatural creatures, blood and guts, intricate worldbuilding, carnal passion to raise some eyebrows. Oh, and one special place we get to see! Exciting secrets are spilled, though there are many to come. This book left me breathless!
