Crown me THE QUEEN

Hi, book buddies :-) I've been feeling like a QUEEN lately thanks to Jennifer L. Armentrout :-D It's been torture having to wait for a new summer to bring me the conclusion to THE PRINCE and THE KING. What a superb story!

MY OPINION OF THE QUEEN

Intense paranormal romance. I can’t believe it's been another year since the previous release, The King.

This is an impressive serial and one I became happily addicted to. It's hard to improve in the magnificent second book, but I have thoroughly enjoyed this installment which I am not sure is the last one or not.

Caden, the fae king, shows overwhelming love and loyalty to the most resilient of humans, Brighton. He really is swoony here. Yet once more it is her who proves her immense strength and honour in all her painful decisions. I was extremely invested in her relationship with Caden, especially due to the bomb dropped at the end of the second novella. Now, it's the consequences that she has to deal with, and it's a heavy burden of emotions, politics, and fate. So engaging and powerful! The passion and the heart-felt scenes were glorious.

The mystery around the Winter Court, evil Aric, and the control liquour continues to baffle the fae. I found it to go in twisted ways. For a moment, I was torn with what I thought was a horrible plot twist, yet it really worked well to build danger, tension, and the final turn of events. Well crafted and beyond emotional, this part of the series touches on all the themes that had to be addressed. And I was so happy to be reunited with Tink.

I think it wraps quite well when it comes to the couple, yet the deeper story of the Summer Court and the Winter Court is still open-ended. Wonderful to read as everything by this author is.

ENJOY AN EXCERPT

My heart squeezed painfully, and I closed my eyes. So much had happened since I woke up, no longer chained to what I believed would be my tomb. I’d just remembered what Aric had insinuated. That a Summer fae had been aiding him. I needed to tell Caden this. Not only that, I was still trying to process everything that had happened with Aric, what had come before that and after. And just an hour ago, I’d felt a sense of hope for the first time since Aric had taken me. The feeling had nearly stolen my breath. Caden loved me. He’d ended his arranged engagement for me, but the awe-inspiring part was that I could still feel attraction and love after being trapped by Aric.

The pain and the humiliation and the god-awful fear hadn’t stolen the capability to desire, want, or love from me. Realizing that was life-altering. I knew that I could move on from what Aric had done, even if doing so took days or months or years. And I knew that Caden would be waiting for me, no matter how long it took. That hope had crashed and burned spectacularly when Tatiana, the would-be Queen of the Summer Court, sat right where Luce was sitting now and explained what would happen if Caden didn’t marry a fae of the Summer Court. A King must choose a Queen to bear the next generation. Without doing so, the entire Summer Court would be weakened, and so would Caden. He would be dethroned, ostracized, and unprotected. Although he would no longer be a King, his blood still could be used by the Winter Court to commit unimaginable horror.

Not only that, if what Tatiana claimed was true, the entire Court’s fertility rate would continue to decrease until the entire race died out. Caden must have known all of that when he ended the engagement with Tatiana. And while that was overwhelming in a way I had little experience with, it was also terrifying. Because without the Summer fae fighting back against the Winter fae, mankind would fall. The Order I worked for wouldn’t be able to hold them back. It wasn’t just the future of the Summer Court that relied on the King choosing his Queen. The entire world did as well.

I’d always dreamed about the kind of love where someone was willing to risk everything. I never thought I’d be on the receiving end of it, but I wanted it—wanted it so damn badly. But was that kind of love worth everything? The downfall of the Summer Court? Mankind? I shuddered as the back of my nose burned. A part of me wanted to scream that yes it was, but could I really live with myself—live happily ever after for however long Caden and I had—while the world fell apart around us? Until the Winter Court came for him, and he wasn’t able to fight them off? Could Caden really live with that? He might think so now, but months and years from now?

I didn’t think so. I knew I couldn’t.

THE FINAL BOOK IN THE MASTERPIECE DUET

I have one chance at a new life. A college education. A future outside of Tanglewood's dark walls. For a breathless moment it seems like I might actually escape.
Then I get a phone call from home.
Damon Scott is my own personal dragon, the fight I've always lost, the secret hope of my heart. And he needs my help right now. Only my mind can solve the puzzle of his long-lost sister. Only my presence can keep him sane as the city fights against him.
Only my heart can unlock a man with such a tragic past.
This is my final gamble, with everything at stake. One last game to win a future for both of us.
And a love strong enough to break the city apart.
THE QUEEN is the final novel in the bestselling Masterpiece duet, about a game of lies and loyalty, of betrayal and power, and ascension to the city's throne.

MY OPINION

A beauty to read. This author's writing style is infused with lyrical emotion, ant it always captivates me.

The Queen is the stunning conclusion to the King/Queen duology. Years have separated the star-crossed platonic lovers, but nothing has disturbed the magnetic link between Penny and Damon. He is still as dark and dangerous as ever, she is still as vulnerable and addicted as before pain marked her. I marvel at Penny's brilliant mind that she puts to great use, though life still poses a puzzle that maths never did. Insidious secrets threaten the very few things that matter to her and tangle her path with the only man who makes her heart tremble with impossible dreams of love and desire.

The tension between them is like a wild animal, all flesh and hidden claws and acute understanding of their wounds that leave you breathless. This man is really hard on himself and his protégée, keeping both of them on the edge of denial and ownership. I loved the story as it's brimming with mystery, bloody psychopaths, intense sensuality and two tortured souls that barely gain their deserved paradise.

I got a bit confused about something related to what Penny knew about Jonathan Scott's situation after book 1. I'd have preferred a longer ending that rewarded the main characters after so many trials, and I also think what happend to Avery would have been brutal and fantastic to actually see it happen. Even though Damon was really stubborn, the relationship was achingly perfect. The Den, Gabriel and Avery, Damon and Penny, all make a magnificent chess game that I will cherish in my memory.

ENJOY AND EXCERPT!

“I’m looking for my dad. He works for you.” That earns me a small smile, his lids low. “He does more than work for me. Does he tell you about his day when he calls me? About threatening people for money? About following through?” Acid burns my throat, because Daddy never mentions that. And I’m not naïve enough to think it hasn’t happened. When I’m in at one of the best colleges in the country, while I live in that dreamworld of numbers and Greek symbols, he’s doing dirty work for a dangerous criminal king.

“So where is he now?” An indolent shrug of one shoulder. “I haven’t seen him. Though I did hear through the grapevine that he started gambling again.” He makes a tsk sound. “That’s never a good thing. Once debts start to pile up, how can I trust him to be loyal? I can’t.” My blood runs cold. “Did you do something to him?” “Let’s be clear, sweetheart. Whatever happened to him, he did it to himself.” The cold silver of his eyes tells me Damon’s conscious would not ache for even one second over my father’s death.

“You asshole,” I hiss, unable to hide my anger any longer. A man steps forward, someone I’ve never seen before. He’s wearing a suit that’s been undone in most of the ways it can be, rumpled and pushed aside. I barely have time to register his aggression, his instinctive response to my insult. How does a man obtain that kind of blind loyalty? The man reaches for me, his fingers brushing my wrist. That’s how close he gets before everything shatters. Damon moves so fast he’s a blur. When he stills, he has the man pressed against the wall, arm twisted at a strange angle. “No one touches her.”

Damon’s voice is quiet but it carries through the crowded hall. A rustle moves through the crowd, half awareness, half movement. The way they look at me has changes, the hostility faded away, replaced by something else. Maybe deference. Or fear. I’m under Damon Scott’s protection now.

Trailer

Enjoy an excerpt

I flinch, glad he can’t see me across two thousand miles. Even working in the kitchens most nights only covers my food, my textbooks. Not the tuition bill. “You’re the one who wanted him to work for you. You’re the one who made him the stake in our last game.”

“And you’re the one who lost,” he says lightly.

“Do you know where he is?”

“Of course. Like you said, he works for me. I would be a careless employer if I let my men go wandering off, gambling and racking up debt and questioning their loyalty to me.”

A shiver runs through me. “Then where is he?”

“He’s a grown-up, Penny. Like you are now. He’s responsible for himself. You only need to worry about your studies. I’m sure Algebraic Topology is taking up plenty of your focus.”

It’s one of my courses this semester. How does he know that?

“Stop playing with me.”

“Why should I?” he says with a soft laugh. “It’s so much fun.”

Frustration stings my eyes, hot and damp. I look up at the wide-open sky, willing myself not to cry. There are a million stars visible here, most of the land owned by Smith College or one of the other campuses. So much land, so much pride. There aren’t buildings climbing on top of other buildings, as if they might sink into the concrete ground if they don’t. There aren’t glass towers reaching to an endless black sky.

“I’m never coming back,” I say abruptly.

His laugh falls silent. “I know.”

“I hate it there. I hate Tanglewood and being powerless. And most of all I hate you.”

The last part is a lie, because I don’t hate him. I’m drawn to him; I’m repelled by him. It’s far too complex a relationship, an equation I’ve never been able to write. It makes me wonder if I’m lying about the other parts—if maybe some twisted part of me misses home.

If some twisted part of me misses being powerless, too.

“Ah, Penny,” he says, sounding infinitely weary. “I hate you too.”

The words shock me, but the hurt inside shocks me more. He shouldn’t be able to wound me. Three years away from home, growing up, growing strong. It should have been enough armor to protect against anything he could say to me. But the arrow sinks deep, proving that I’ll never be able to escape him.

“What did I do to you?” I ask, quiet, in a voice like I’m six years old again. Like I’m speaking to the wild boy I found by the lake, one I lured into my trailer like a wolf.

He answers the same way, a surly teenage boy, fierce and vulnerable at once. “You made me care. You made me want, when I needed to leave. You made me feel, when I would have preferred to die. You brought me back to life.”

And I condemned him to torture. That’s what happened when he sacrificed himself so that I could stay safe. Two children with so few choices. “I’m sorry,” I whisper.

“Don’t worry. I got my revenge, after all.”

My blood runs cold, almost subzero at the words. There’s only one person left in my sad little family. One person he could hurt. “Did you hurt him?”

“By giving him a job when he couldn’t hold one down? By paying him enough that his daughter could escape the city, could go to a fancy college instead of becoming a corner-store whore? Yes, I’ve been horrible to him. A monster.”

“Then why isn’t he answering his phone?”

In the pause I can picture him in a three-piece suit, reclining in one of his ridiculously expensive leather chairs. Some amber liquid in a crystal-cut glass. “Don’t come back,” he says, his voice grim. “You made it out of here. Let that be enough.”

A soft click ends the connection, leaving me bereft.

And more worried than before.

Something is happening in Tanglewood, something bad enough for my father not to call, something horrible enough that even Damon Scott has warned me away. I look up at the infinite stars, but they’re dimmer than before. The whole world muted. It wasn’t a new life that I found so far from home. It was a long dream, and now I’m painfully awake.
