“Is this convincing?” He asks. He’s so close that I can feel his breath on my lips, and I realize that I want him to do it. I want him to kiss me. 
I give a slight shake of my head in response. 
“No?” He smirks, knowing exactly what he’s doing to me. His left hand leaves the wall to curl around my hip and he presses his chest to mine. “How about this?” 
“Almost,” I whisper. I wet my lips and the tip of my tongue nearly grazes his bottom lip. His expression goes from playful to heated in an instant, then he’s closing the final distance. 
It’s soft at first, just a brush of his lips against mine, but soon he’s cupping my face with both hands, tilting my head back as his tongue sweeps into my mouth, his movements confident and skilled. Unhurried and unyielding. 
My hands find his shirt, pulling him closer as his tongue fucks my mouth. Because that’s exactly what this is. This isn’t kissing. Or maybe it is, and I’ve been kissing the wrong boys. 
Jesse groans, fitting a firm thigh between my legs, and the need bubbling inside me threatens to boil over at the sensation. But all too soon, he pulls back, leaving me breathless. 
“Was that convincing enough?”

MY OPINION

Can a stalker be protective? Can he save the girl of his dreams without turning himself into her nightmare? All these questions are excitingly answered in this novella. It's a stand-alone story in a series that follows several related characters.

Carter is afraid that his darkness will destroy the only woman who's stirred him out of his obsessive ways about touching and intimacy. I really liked how he watches her to prevent and even thwart all harm that seems to haunt Quinn, who works in the club that belongs to this Savage family of dark, criminal bosses. The best part is that contrast between his restraint and protective attitude towards her, and the instances when he explodes and marks her with his rough passion.

This story reminds me of Sky Warren's dark heroes and heroines and their twisted pasts. It's an atmosphere that I like a lot.

Besides the steamy scenes, there's also a lot of violence due to so many bad guys that surround the female character's life and the Savages' line of work. What's funny is the sometimes blasé attitude these tough men sport towards it. Dark humor, I suppose :-D

It's quite intense for a novella. It's packed with drama, feelings of rejection and inadequacy, twisted personalities in search of a happy future that's been denied to them.

I enjoyed this couple's impossible romance because it touched my emotions that so many obstacles and fear stop them from accepting a life together. The last part was so emotional! The whole story evolves a lot from stalking to frantic passion to sabotaging themselves for not believing they're worthy of each other. The writing is good and the storyline is dark, yet hopeful; violent yet sweet and endearing. I loved the ending! I really hope there are more stories about the Savage people.

MY OPINION

What a discovery. This is a rare jewel. I'd never heard of dark smut romance, but this feels as if it belonged in that category. It's harsh, violent, taboo and completely hot.

Step away if you can't handle a villain who's hot for his young stepdaughter. In my case, as it's fiction and safe, I loved it because it's atmospheric, provocative and the dark male character has a heart though a bit hardened on the outside.

The shady businessman, owner of night clubs and married in unclear circumstances with the heroine's mother, is hard and demanding, no too likeable, but he's got an intense, magnetic presence and these outbursts of possessiveness towards her that I relished. Also, there was this tension in the air because his intentions were not clear, but scary and exciting.

It's not exactly romantic in a sweet, pink sense of the word, but in its darker, deeper connotations. I enjoyed this contrast of rough and utter protectiveness for a girl who had been unloved and rejected for so long in her life. Be aware of age difference, Daddy/brat behaviour, some violence and criminal night life.

A hilarious dinner scene and a round epilogue complete this very naughty, very arousing novella, and convince me to want more of this writer.

EXCERPT

  Care to explain what the f*ck you’re doing in my club?” He leans on his desk, looking casual yet somehow frightening. His eyes, green like lime, shine with a hint of danger in them, and his lips purse.
“I wanted to…I dunno, to unwind. Have some fun.” I shrug, looking down.
“Be specific,” he orders.
“I wanted to drink and dance,” I admit through gritted teeth, feeling myself blushing again and hating myself for it. “And Jersey is small and I didn’t want to bump into my usual high school crowd. All the seniors are going to stupid house parties, which I don’t like. I knew I could probably sneak into this place because it’s so…” Full of underage bimbos, I’m tempted to add, but I don’t. “It’s New York,” I heave a sigh, shrugging with one shoulder.
“I knew we’d eventually get in somewhere.”
“Drink and dance?” he repeats coldly.
I doubt Graham has ever danced. I know he drinks but he seems to be too icy and calculated to do something as fun as dancing. I offer a little nod, feeling a tad less scared but a lot more intrigued. He turns to the wall behind his desk. There are long shelves full of expensive liquor behind his desk. They cover up the whole goddamn wall, to be exact. With his hands knotted behind his back, he examines the liquor like it’s the most fascinating thing in the world before plucking one full bottle of scotch. He takes out four shot glasses from the drawer in his desk and places them in a straight line. After which he unscrews the cap and pours the alcohol into all of them with the skill of a bartender.
I flinch. Is he going to get drunk in front of me just to show me that he can and I can’t? What a douche.
A hot douche, my brain corrects, quite unnecessarily.
He is my step-dad. I shouldn’t even think about it.
“What song did you say was playing? The one I should have my DJ fired for?”
Oh, shit. He is definitely smirking. And hot damn, he has a dimple. Just the one, on his left cheek. He is so perfectly imperfect. This is not looking good for me. I’ve lived with this man for three years and I’ve only just noticed that he has one dimple. I love dimples, goddammit.
“My Boo by Ghost Town.” I swallow. I actually really like that song, but it’s so nineties.
Graham plops down on his executive chair and rolls himself toward the giant Apple screen. He taps his keyboard a few times before the familiar song starts blasting through his speakers. Then, he leans back on his chair and stares at me closely.
“What?” I ask, knowing that my eyes are wide and that I look, in all probability, like a deer caught in headlights.
“Dance. Drink.” He moves one of the full shot glasses across the desk and in my direction, some of the liquid spilling over the expensive oak. “That’s what you’re here for, no?”
