When you wait for a story with barely suppressed crave, and it's time to read it, you switch off life, duty and reason, and just devour it :o)
This book is all that to me. What's more, it's intensity itself.
The short prequel, Tough Love, was like a dark fairy tale. The mafia princess and the foot soldier, teenagers falling in love like Rome and Juliette.
This novel is what happens after "the end", when Prince Charming turns into the dragon and kidnaps the princess to make her his against her will and on the ashes of the young lover he could have been.
Told from Clara's point of view and in a melancholic tone, this romance was everything I was hoping for. Mafia politics mixed with bloody vengeance and heartless strategy, a complex struggle between two people who loved each other fiercely but ended up as adults on the brink of disaster.
I love a female character who is an artist. Clara pays a beautiful homage to all the strong women in the Stripped series. I also loved her unwavering belief that Gio was still alive under the deadening layers of the monster he's been turned into. She tries to unravel his secret humanity, so the scenes are filled with as much painful hope as passion that smolders on every page.
Despite the air of brutality and menace that make Giovanni so darkly desirable, he shows beautiful sparks of tenderness. The intimacy actually feels like a small fire that builds and builds into an inferno.
It's a rare thing to see a love that dies and is reborn, stronger and more meaningful than ever because it cleanses the wrongs of the past and heals the soul for the happiness it deserves. That's what this story conveys and that's what I felt at the end. Giovanni and Clara's love is hard, shaken by torture and fear, but after a whirlwind of pain, a scared dog, betrayal, scorching and touching sensuality, and an epilogue of true love, it shines with Skye Warren's usual brilliance. Will we have more of the King and Queen of Vegas mafia? I sincerely hope so.
