Skye Warren releases another amazing dark jewel, BETTER WHEN IT HURTS.
I have a
weakness for forbidden romances. It's downright addictive when it's written by
Skye Warren. I've read this novel with a mixture of exhilaration and dread. Blue
is a menacing man with a grudge against Lola. And she works at a seedy club
doing things she despises. I can't help but being drawn to these horrid places
in books, but they do inspire me with sorrow for the female characters. Is this
why I care for them and want them to find their happy life so much?
The author's
words are sensitive when touching such crude matters as betrayal, prostitution
or foster care. I always feel drawn into her characters' minds and it's no
different with Lola. It's absorbing the way she tells of her most intimate
thoughts, her most subtle feelings.
This is a harsh,
cruel story about a very flawed and hurt girl who betrays the boy she loves,
and then she has to pay for all his pain in a humiliating sacrifice she's
willing to provide. It's the darkest story I've read from this writer. It
gripped my heart and twisted it. I loved the plot and the emotions, but it was
really painful to read at times. I truly love the way the author writes, her
impressive imagination and depth, but it's hard for me to accept all that pain
and degradation.
While I
couldn't enjoy the cruelty, I was absolutely fascinated by the intensity of the
emotions, the beauty of the words and the bittersweet darkness of a love turned
wrong only to find the light again. That's what this author does best.
