My latest
guilty pleasure is Monster Stepbrother. Brace yourselves for an intense romance, book
buddies! ;o)
Maya and
Oliver meet as stepsiblings when they're very young, but it's not until a few
years later that their bodies and attitudes are ripe enough to spark fatal
attraction between them. That's a good point. Through taunts, tease and
violence revenge, they embark on an obsession of a forbidden, lustful nature.
At first, it
was fun to watch them fight each other, nag each other because of their
unfulfilled issues, but when it all exploded, I thought there was some kind of
redemption for Oliver after all the suffering he puts Maya through. To my
surprise, it all went to hell after a tiny glimpse of hope.
I couldn't
stop reading though.
Chapters
don't follow a lineal timeline, but present and past are mixed so that adds an
extra taunting quality to the story. With a fast and furious pace, the story
just sucks you in.
The forbidden
attraction to each other turns them reckless and angry. There was a hypnotizing
quality to the words that describe this consuming relationship. Oliver had some
dark emotions that he kept hidden from Maya except to pour them into submitting
her to his will. And the poor girl becomes his slave, oblivious to everything
but her addiction to him.
Still, things
kept surprising me. There was a turn of events I hadn't foreseen and it all
changed so much!
Even though
the writing is direct and simple, it conveys the crazy emotions these two
people struggle with. Pain, secrets, loss, insecurity... they all strangle them
into hurting each other and themselves. I felt sorry for their blindness to how
much they belonged together. And oh the steamy times! Harsh, but hot.
To my mind,
there was too much use of the F word. I think there should be a limit to it,
some is good, too much is tiresome. Nevertheless, the story is crazy, sexy and
entertaining to the point of obsession. Read it, for f's sake! ;o)
