Hi, book buddies :-) Do you remember this AMAZING cover? Well, I finally had the chance to read the book behind it! :-D
Anne Malcom’s
BIRDS OF PARADISE
MY OPINION
With an atmosphere of despair, the dark narrative presents the constricted life of an agoraphobic woman whose past is filled with dread and violence.
This is a dark romance with a lyrical prose that has a haunting quality to it. It touches on very delicate issues, and I got emotional over one thing in particular that was so heart-wrenchingly described. Bittersweet and devastating for a woman.
Elizabeth has suffered all kinds of abuse and neglect, yet she finds an oddly comforting harbour in the captivity she endures at the hands of a cold, emotionless and murderous man. They dance a perverted game of pain, survival and craving that's a bit slow to develop, ugly but fascinating to watch, and you still pray for a happy ending amog dead things, broken hearts and tortured lives.
The characters' sickness feeds off each other and they reinforce it somehow. I can't say that I enjoyed the experience specifically, as they are quite crazy, but it is compelling to see how far they go and if they will finally be able to comfort each other or kill themselves in the end.
There are steamy scenes but laden with pain which can be triggering for some readers. The dialogues sometimes didn't seem too natural, but declarations worthy of a stage.
This monstruous couple find in each other a sort of warped love, so they change or evolve into an even more twised version of themselves. I was curious to see this to the end which is dripping with blood, vengeance, dark secrets and revelations. Interesting to read an as eery as that cover!

I was trapped in the house with a man that had meant to kill me. Might very well still mean to kill me. But not by locked doors, force, or ropes or chains. Not physical ones at least. The man who very well might kill me gave me the impression that he wanted nothing more than for me to walk out that door.
I was not his captive.
I was my own.
I could very well die here. If there was anything left worth killing.
If there was anything left in me that wanted to live.
He collected dead things, after all. And with every day that passed, I found myself wanting to stay, even if that meant I was part of his collection of dead things.
Especially if I was part of collection.

About the Mastermind:
Anne Malcom has been an avid reader since before she can remember, her mother responsible for her book addiction. It started with magical journeys into the world of Hogwarts and Middle Earth, then as she grew up her reading tastes grew with her. Her obsession with books and romance novels in particular gave Anne the opportunity to find another passion, writing. Finding writing about alpha males and happily ever afters more fun than reading about them, Anne is not about to stop any time soon.
Raised in small town New Zealand, Anne had a truly special childhood, growing up in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. She has backpacked across Europe, ridden camels in the Sahara, eaten her way through Italy, and had all sorts of crazy adventures. For now, she's back at home in New Zealand and quite happy. But who knows when the travel bug will bite her again.
