MY OPINION
Unrequited love and secrets from the past launch this suspenseful romance in very intense terms.
In an atmospheric style, the woman who betrayed Cade summons him to ask for his help. The prose conveys all the turmoil and angry desire that still grip this powerful man. Why did she betray him? And will he be able to resist her despite his rock-hard dismissal? I liked the contrast between his inner thoughts, full of denial and longing, and his outward coldness.
I was invested in the mystery surrounding the characters as a couple in the past because they are now really different, really at odds. The outrageous proposal also enhances the sharp enigma around their original relationship and the current outcome of their separation.
I noticed that the narration spends a lot of time in the male character's mind as the story is told from his point of view. That seemed to drag the pace a bit sometimes as it took away from the suspense plot. However, it also sets the psychological mood very keenly.
He is struggling with his resentment tangled with the feelings that are coming back to the surface. My favourite parts are an exhilarating scene with steep danger and incredible emotion, the build-up of Cade's devotion to his old love that grows from grudge to care in such a gripping way, and Donovan's contribution to the unfolding of the chilling plot. This character and what he helps uncover are a magnificent tie-in with the rest of novels in this universe.
Also, the bomb the author drops in the last line is a mastermind's twist. Very intriguing and passionate start of a trilogy.
