Hi, book buddies :o) As a fan of Goodreads, one day I was lucky enough to bump into the author of THE LAST THING, who was preparing for her future release. I could jump into the wagon and here I am, having read this pretty reversed love story. Weird? No, good.
This story
could well be about when life empties you, it always brings hope afterwards.
The most
unlikely couple get together for one night. It's unbridled desire to forget the
horror from the past for Quinn, and it's a strong pull for Chase. They don't
want to date , but an undercurrent of emotion doesn't let them forget what they could become together if
they allowed it to happen. It doesn't seem more than a dream though. He is so
busy with his acting career and being single, and she has a huge pile of regrets and guilt on her shoulders.
The unexpected is fate's way to change all that.
The pros:
- a girl who
doesn't look for commitment because her heart is mourning
- a first
intimate encounter that's hot and promising
- a twist
that throws both characters into something they don't want but need (it was
pretty exciting on paper to see them thus connected, though in real life would
have scared the living daylights out of me)
- sweet
development of the relationship, it starts strong and then it takes its time to
lay some good foundation
The cons:
- casual
narrative that doesn't soar the story out of normalcy
- dialogues
that sometimes feel like "been there, read that"
I enjoyed how
both characters have to deal with their issues of fame and emotional turmoil,
and then they find the strength they need to do so in each other. There's a big
tragedy in Quinn's life. I felt sorry for her and moved by how sweet it is that
Chase is trying to support her when nobody had.
However, I
wasn't that much captivated by it at first. I didn't really feel connected to
their story until further into it. It gets progressively better and more
meaningful which is exactly what must have been like for them too.
For someone
with a trauma like Quinn's, it's harder to face the kind of public life Chase
leads. I relate to her absolute reluctance to be subjected to the critical eye
of the world. The end of the story is full of drama, betrayal and heartbreak.
All in all,
it's a good story about recovering from past hurts. I liked how the hidden
truth comes up at the end. The female character goes through a massive
evolution and her strength is hard-earned. I admire her for her big steps.
And
if there is a message that we can take out of reading this book, let it be
this: there's hope to find yourself again.
