Recommendation: Like Father, Like Son + Giveaway

Hi, book buddies :-) It's getting hot in here. And dramatic, too. Look at today's romance.

It's the first part of a duet about a woman who loses her fiancé to death and then finds solace in his father. Wow. I had to read this no matter what!

MY OPINION

I've never read a taboo romance like this one. What appealed to me was the premise itself about a bereaved father who takes his son's widow under his protection. You can imagine where the taboo comes from. It's so exciting and sinful! I couldn't resist :-D

This is the first part of a duet and it's very tempting. I really loved the beginning when the tragedy happens and both father and young widow are left wounded and with a myriad of painful memories. The letter that the son writes to his father is so poignant. The writing style tends to the lighter side, so the story develops in sad, bittersweet notes but not overly dramatic. It's touching, I did get teary a few times, but it's the good kind, not the devastating one. Good for me.

I was really eager for the forbidden attraction to begin. I know, I'm a bit evil :-D However,it seemed a bit rushed and I'd rather it were more subtle at first. Though the heat is really slow-burn.

The father reminds the heroine of her late husband constantly in an older, wiser version, and I liked that, it seemed natural and bonding at the same time. Maguire and Holland deepen their relationship while fighting their feelings. It's cute to see them banter or get jealous, it's so obvious they care for each other in all the sweet things they do. And I loved his job and how he welcomes her in his world.

I enjoyed how their lives go on with the grief and also the joys, never forgetting the past, but focusing on moving on. Something important binds them in a way that I adored. It makes the plot stronger in emotional levels. And then, several things happen that made my heart skip a beat or two. The cliffhanger is double-edged, thank goodness the second part is coming soon!

Favourite quote:

And it's in his arms that I start living again.

His last request? Dad, please take care of Holland. You're the only one I trust. But the thoughts swirling through my mind are certainly not what my late son had in mind. How do I resist this woman in front of me?

I stop to let this sink in. I'm a father without a son? Is this possible? My lips tremble at the thought of the last time I'd seen him only a month ago. He never brought Holland, wanting to spend as much time together, just him and me. If I'd known it was all the time I’d had with him, would I have held him longer? Done anything different? It doesn't matter, not now that I essentially have my father status stripped from me.

As if staring at Dear Dad isn't enough to rip my heart out, I begin to devour the letter and his last words.

Dear Dad,
Fuck, If you're reading this, it means I'm gone. I had one dream, growing old with Holland. Death won't stop me from providing for my wife.  And because you're the best man I know, what I'm about to ask—my last request—I know you'll do. Please take care of Holland. Take her back to California with you. It's a lot—I know. But, I’m placing my most precious possession in your hands.

See, we don't have much saved and the military won't let Holland stay in government quarters after my death. I have very little to provide for her if I die. I have my SGLI (life insurance), but it’s not enough after she pays for school. But she's talented in design. Please help her get on her feet. Love her like you love me. She has nothing to go back to in Virginia. Her family will suck the little life insurance she has of mine dry.

Mom would have felt so abandoned if I went straight to you from high school. But if I trust anyone with Holland, it's you.

One of my regrets in life is not fighting Mom to come live with you. By the time I knew I could stand up to her, I had met Holland. Please don't tell Mom this. She tried, I know she did. She loves me, this I never doubted. But I wish I knew you better, Dad.

Please know that every moment we had together, I treasured. I know that's not a real dude-like thing to say, but I did. You made me the man who Holland fell in love with. Let her know when she falls in love again, it's okay! I want everything for her that we couldn’t have together.

And, Dad, I know Mom did you wrong. You never made me choose, but it made you cynical. That's why you've never committed to anyone else. Please, find a woman you love and live the life I couldn't.

You will always be a dad—my dad.

Love,
Scott

He has given me closure and purpose. In his honor, I'll make sure Holland is taken care of.

And coming soon...

Blurb

I laid my husband to rest....
Scott was my world and my future. He loved me so much, making plans for me in the event of his death. He was after all in a war zone and the odds were high he may not come home. But now I can’t help but think about the new man in my life – my husband’s father.
Maguire creates a desire deep inside of me I never knew existed. This is more than lust. I keep on asking myself the same question. Have I fallen in love with him because he's so much like my late husband or because he's his own man? Only time will tell.
After all, you can't choose love, it chooses you.
