Hi, book buddies :-) Gritty and mysterious hold a grip on you? Then you're in luck because SIERRA SIMONE is an author to follow with caution but passion :-D You will understand me when you read the first two books in a haunting new series.
Today, I'm sharing with you my opinion of the first book, A Lesson in Thorns, and also the recently released Feast of Sparks. You have the rare privilege to be able to read both books in a row, and let me tell you... it's a unique experience.
Today, I'm sharing with you my opinion of the first book, A Lesson in Thorns, and also the recently released Feast of Sparks. You have the rare privilege to be able to read both books in a row, and let me tell you... it's a unique experience.
With a spectacular prologue, this story sets an atmospheric and eery tone that borders dark poetry. A group of teens perform a playful ritual in the bowels of a secret chapel that will affect their fate years later. Sensual, decadent, and poignantly bittersweet, the tale of these teens turned twisted adults blooms into a glorious tableau of torn feelings and dramatic lust.
The author has a talent to paint a darkly inviting secret that you have to immerse yourself in even if it fills you with a kind of thrilling dread. Will I come out unscathed? Will it change me, stir something inside of me I will not be able to appease again?
Like a child born from Wuthering Heights and Downton Abbey, the plot merges dusty libraries, pagan folklore, kinky friendships and metaphysical urges. It is purely psychological as these three men and three women clash in emotion, fear and desires inside a mansion steeped in generational mysteries and mystical heritage.
As they succumb to an ancient ritual, they also find themselves while writhing in their respective truths and flaws and polygamous cravings. I loved the intimate atmosphere, the primitive sense of religious identity and all the characters as they spoke to each other. The dialogues are dripping with passion and hurt. Whatever they share might be dirty and carnal, but it's never disturbing because holy and unholy blend beautifully. The climax of their inevitable goals is absolutely mesmerizing, a communion of the senses and the flesh that left me quivering even if it goes beyond my comfort zone, or perhaps because of it. I warn you that there are cliffhangers to make you obsess about the next book.

Favourite quote:
I relent, and surrender my dignity, as hope so often demands.
The magic runs still potent in this lavish, revealing continuation of A Lesson in Thorns.
From the tragic discovery Proserpina made at the end of the first book, we are plunged right in in the emotional aftermath that brims with Bdsm intensity and scorching hot intimacy. I admit I have to skip certain passages when the character pairings are not to my liking, but the scenes are always beautifully narrated and break all preconceptions. Even if Thornchapel wasn't suffused in its own kind of ancient magic, these people who share raw feelings and their bodies certainly are.
I marvel at the complexity and delicate intricacy of the prose. It unearths and gives word to all the unspoken sensibilities we hide or just are unable to voice out loud. The carnal and lewd, yes, but also the tender and needy. I loved Saint Sebastian's inner thoughts, his pain and his flaws.
This coven of friends explore not only their bonds, but also the mystical influence of Thornchapel. Small pieces of the puzzle are being put together. Hatred becomes truth, rituals are enacted to their most uninhibited core. It ends indeed with a feast of avid, frenzied, primitive, profane and sacred. And one final spark of ruin. It's going to be too much to wait for the next Pandora's Box.
A heart circled by thorns and crowned by fire, and I’ve always thought that if there was any kind of heart worth having, it would be that one.

What is this about?
I’m an outcast and a loner, named for death itself. Fate wasn’t supposed to have plans for me.
But then she came back—the girl I once kissed in a thorn-covered chapel in the woods. She came back, and I could no more resist her than I could pry out my own heart. And by some trick of fate, she wants me as much as I want her. The only problem? She also wants the man who owns Thornchapel, Auden Guest.
And so do I.
Eight years ago, I did something to Auden, something terrible. He hurt me back the only way he knew how, and so here we are: our hatred seasoned with pain and my loneliness seasoned with longing. The only thing we can agree on is Proserpina Markham, and she wants us to find a way to be together—all three of us.
If Auden wants to earn her as his submissive, then he has to earn me as well.
But with the discovery of bones behind the altar and the carnal revel of Beltane fast approaching, it’s becoming clear that Thornchapel’s secrets are much deeper and older than any of us could have ever guessed. And no matter how bright and merry a feast of sparks may be, it’s always followed by ashes.
And darkness.
ENJOY AN EXCERPT
Shame, hot and prickling, needles everywhere at my face and chest and belly as I begin to bend down to the floor. The cool air that caresses my pussy is now everywhere as the position begins to expose my most secret flesh, and there’s no pretending away the reality of what I’m doing. I’m doing something I’ve never done before, I’m offering up the filthiest part of me for inspection, and despite everything the three of us have shared in the past twenty-four hours, I’m flooded with shame. It’s real shame now, not play-shame, and my safe word floats to the top of my mind, a buoy in the clear waters.
Convivificat.
I don’t want to safe out right now, I’m nowhere near the edge, but it’s nice to have it there all the same. Reassuring. There’s nothing they can do that I can’t stop.
And anyway, this is who I am—who I’ve been growing into ever since I found the words to define it.
