Ever since I read Midnight Hunter, I've been a fan of Brianna Hale's beautiful prose, so count me interested when she proposed THE PROTÉGÉ as her next brilliant idea for a romance.
The Protégé
Author: Brianna Hale
Genre: Taboo Romance
He’s always
protected me since I was eight years old, the neglected girl he took off the
street and raised as his own. Laszlo can feel what music needs instinctively.
He can tell what I need.
My world shattered
the night of my eighteenth birthday and he still hasn’t forgiven me for what I
did. I’m not asking him to love me, touch me, take me to bed. What I want goes
deeper than that and I have to say this out loud because it’s one thing that
music won’t be able to tell him.
I want what only
Laszlo can give me. I want to be his protégé again. And this time, I’m going to
be so good for him.
Yes, maestro.
Yes, sir.
Yes, daddy.
Yes, maestro.
Yes, sir.
Yes, daddy.
MY OPINION
The forbidden wrapped up in art.
This book tells the complex story of a young woman who met her mentor, protector and lover in one single man throughout the years. It has that elegant quality of novels past. Music and poetry intertwine in the most beautiful writing style.
I favour the part of the story prior to physical advances. Those first stages of the relationship between Isabeau and Lazlo, from her childhood to her second chance at being his protégé, have such warmth, intimacy and longing that it calls to me in too many ways to count them. The sense of happiness from total trust was there too, and the profound void from having lost that state forever. It was keen and poignant. Then, what ensnared me was that they were musicians. Music permeates every feeling, every word, every action both characters take, and it’s like being embraced by beauty.
The chapters from the past intersect with the present and there’s a point when it runs on the edge of inappropriate. Nevertheless, it is rendered in such a delicate way that it’s like a sigh containing thunder. Above all this is a tale of love, and love touches every single word.
The delicacy eventually takes a hit, though.
The innocence that marks their bond transitions into a playground of dominance and submission that soothes the characters’ needs. Sensuality blooms across the pages, hot and unrestricted, yet also brazen and harsh. Beware, the soft-hearted readers like me Even though certain words and actions were beyond my comfort zone, everything around those areas mesmerized me. The forbidden love, the guilt and doubts over it, the cold separation and the tentative reconciliation of the painful past and the new possibilities between them.
I loved the powerful epiphany of emotion and truths at the end, the breathtaking love that finally breaks through after all the regrets, sadness and loneliness. And always the music like a healing force for everyone. A masterpiece romance.
Favourite quote: I won’t exhaust myself trying to be something I’m not, only to be left in the end with the ashes of my misguided efforts.

ABOUT THE MASTERMIND
There's nothing Brianna Hale likes more than a large, stern
alpha male with a super-protective and caring streak, and when she's not
writing about them she can usually be found with a book, a cocktail, planning
her next trip to a beautiful location or attending the theatre. She believes
that pink and empowerment aren’t mutually exclusive, and everyday adventures
are possible. Brianna lives in London.
Book buddies, if you like beautifully written dark romance or music,
you will love this novel.
Try it, I insist ;-)
